Sara Lee will invest on Bakery in US

Sara Lee has revealed plans to invest in its North American bakery business, quashing rumours that it was looking to sell the struggling division. During an analyst day yesterday (14 September), CJ Fraleigh, CEO of Sara Lee's North American retail and foodservice business, said the company began "additional investment" in bakery during the fourth quarter of the company's last fiscal year. Barilla sells Kamps to ECM

Italian pasta group Barilla has entered into an agreement to sell its Kamps bakery chain in Germany to ECM Equity Capital. The company said the deal is not subject to approval by antitrust authorities and is set to close shortly. It did not reveal the value of the transaction.

The move follows a failed attempt by Barilla in 2008 to sell the chain after deciding it was no longer a core part of the business.

Raisio will launch Benecol Bread in Romania

Finnish food group Raisio is planning to launch a Benecol-branded bread in Romania with local bakery firm Doprogea Grup to open up a new market for cholesterol-lowering food in Romania.

Benecol contains plant stanol ester, which is an ingredient patented worldwide by Raisio.The ingredient is recommended as part of a cholesterol-lowering diet and Raisio has moved to launch Benecol products in various markets.

Kraft invests EUR 15m in biscuit brand development

Kraft Foods is investing EUR 15m in a new European biscuit development facility in France. The new European Centre of Expertise for Biscuits will open in 2011 to develop the firm's biscuit brands that include LU, Mikado, Prince and TUC. It will be the 12th Kraft Food research and development centre globally.

Researchers, product and packaging designers will move from current offices leased at Danone's research and development centre that is close to where the new plant will be built in Saclay...
