Confectionery giant Mars predicts a major cocoa shortage by 2020 and reveals harmonization of global cocoa certification programmes to ensure meaningful income hikes for farmers is one of its sustainable cocoa project goals.  The chocolate company warns that "unless more is done to promote sustainability, the industry as a whole can expect a shortfall of more than one million tonnes of cocoa in just nine years. A turn-around in the global sugar market is forecasted following a three years of declining stocks, according to analysts.

During the 2011/12 cycle sugar production is expected to exceed consumption and the surplus could potentially create more of a buyers market for food manufacturers. The sharp rise in global production is expected as producers respond to high sugar prices. Ivory Coast Unrest will not effect Cocoa Supplies

Posted by Turgut Ziyal on Monday, February 21, 2011, In : commodity

Cocoa supplies are not currently disrupted by Ivorian unrest, according to the latest official data, calming the nerves of cocoa traders. Cocoa output is still getting through the Ivory Coast’s ports or is being smuggled through Ghana for subsequent export via other West African ports. However, if democratically-elected president Alassane Ouattara succeeds in fully implementing the export ban this would have an immediate impact on cocoa futures. Recently, Outtara said he would extend the ba...

World Bank President Robert Zoellick warned leaders of the top global economies Saturday that the world is reaching a danger point where soaring food prices threaten further political instability.

"I mentioned that we are reaching a danger point," Zoellick said, adding that he had urged G20 finance ministers and central bank chiefs meeting here to "put food first in 2011." Global food prices have risen for the sixth month in succession. Wheat has almost doubled since June, sugar is at a 30-year high, and pork is up by a quarter since the beginning of 2010. "We are entering danger territory," said the UN Food and Agriculture Organisati...

Posted by Turgut Ziyal on Tuesday, December 28, 2010, In : commodity

The Commission is failing to recognise the urgency of the sugar supply deficit in the EU in its deferral of a decision regarding the hike in the sugar export quota until January, claims the CIUS (Commission for Industrial Suger Users), which represents sugar using food and drink industries in the bloc. Secretary-General of CIUS, Muriel Korter, told that while the body welcomes the postponement, the deferral leaves the industry in limbo with confectionery and other food and drink markers conti...

Posted by Turgut Ziyal on Thursday, August 12, 2010, In : commodity

Summary of the article by Joachim von Braun published in Financial Times on August 9,2010...read more here.
