Global fish consumption increase threathens world fish stocks

Global fish consumption has reached its highest ever level of about 17 kg per person on average, supplying more than 3bn people with at least 15 per cent of their average animal protein intake, according to a new report from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). Braitain questions clone meat

Britain's food watchdog said it had found that meat from the offspring of a cloned cow had entered the UK food chain and had been eaten, stirring controversy over whether such products are ethical. The Food Standards Agency (FSA) said that under European rules, suppliers are supposed to obtain a license before selling products from cloned animals but added there was no suggestion they posed any health danger to consumers. Smithfield Food sells noncore business

Smithfield Foods has completed the sale of most of its RMH Foods entree business and its Maverick Food joint venture in China. It was announced yesterday that  it has sold all of the assets of RMH Foods, which produces fully cooked beef, pork and chicken entrees, to a group of investors led by the Rocke family meanwhile Maverick Food, the group’s Chinese joint venture, has also been sold to COFCO Limited, China's largest national agricultural trading and processing company.

JBS acquired Tatiara from Vion in Australia

JBS, Brazilian meat group, has announced a deal that will make it the largest lamb producer in Australia.

The company said yesterday (15 December) that it had agreed to pay Dutch meat business Vion Food Group US$30m for lamb processor Tatiara Meat Co.in Australia. The transaction, arranged through JBS's local subsidiary Swift Australia.
