UK discusses to close down FSA

The UK's Department of Health has informed that the coalition government has not make a decision on the future of the Food Standards Agency (FSA). Reports this weekend in the UK suggested that the FSA, the country's food watchdog, would be disbanded. According to Reuters, the FSA's functions would be moved to the Department of Health and the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. Kellogg pulls immunity claim from its cereals

Kellogg has agreed to pull a health claim it made on Rice Krispies in the US. The cereal giant had advertised its Rice Krispies brand as helping "support your child's immunity". However, after a probe by the Federal Trade Commission, Kellogg has agreed to not make claims about any potential health benefits unless it has scientific evidence, the watchdog said.

Washington State imposes sales tax on candy and gum

A sales tax on certain candy and gum products is due to come into effect in Washington State on June 1, as part of the state’s effort to plug its $2.8bn deficit.

Food Manufacturers face with a real threat: "Fat Tax"

Recently, PepsiCo has announced it will be cutting back on the levels of salt fat & sugar by up to 25% across the globe by 2015. PepsiCo is not alone in reducing the amount of salt, sugar and fats from products. Kellogg is one of a number of leading manufacturers who have been improving their health credentials by reducing the salt content across brands such as Rice Krispies and Corn Flakes and Mars have been working on reformulating Mars bars for over five years.

FDA warns 16 manufacturers for mislabelling...read this in the context of my previous post!

US food safety officials have written warning letters to 16 manufacturers that claim the companies have broken labelling laws.

Two Nestle divisions, snack group Diamond Foods and pie maker Schwan's Consumer Brands are among those to have received the letters in the last ten days, according to the FDA website.

The FDA letters issue a series of warnings to the companies on the health claims made on product labels and on brand websites.

European Food Safety Authority reduce usage of some colourants

The European Food Safety Authority’s scientific panel on additives, the ANS Panel, has lowered the Acceptable Daily Intakes for the artificial food colours Quinoline Yellow (E104), Sunset Yellow FCF (E110) and Ponceau 4R (E124) - three of the food colours linked to hyperactivity in the "Southhampton Study" As a result, the Panel concluded that exposure to these colours could exceed the new ADIs (acceptable daily intakes) for both adults and children.
