Selgros Cash&Carry grows in Russia

With the opening of the third SELGROS cash-and-carry store, transGourmet - a joint venture of REWE Group and Coop Switzerland - continues its expansion in Russia.

The first SELGROS outlet was opened in Kotelniki near Moscow in 2008; the second one opened in the city of Rjasan in March 2009.

US Retail sales show positive move in January

Totaling $355.8 billion, retail sales in January increased 0.5 percent from the previous month and 4.7 percent from January 2009, according to the U.S. Department of Commerce (DoC).

Sales for the month at general merchandise stores rose 1.5 percent, the most substantial gain since February 2009.

Core retail sales, which exclude autos, gasoline and building materials, rose 0.8 percent after falling 0.3 percent in December.

Wal-Mart cuts 11,200 jobs at Sam's Club

Sam's Club, the warehouse club division of Wal-Mart Stores Inc is cutting roughly 11,200 jobs, or about 10 percent of its workforce, as it outsources in-store product demonstrations and eliminates positions used to recruit new business members. Sam's Club Chief Executive Officer Brian Cornell said on Sunday that the retailer would outline charges associated with the job cuts in February, when it releases fourth-quarter results. U.S. retail industry sales seen up 2.5 percent for 2010

U.S. retail sales should rise 2.5 percent this year, signaling that store chains have made it through the worst of the downturn as improvements in the housing and job markets bolster shoppers' confidence, a trade group forecast on Tuesday. The 2010 forecast from the National Retail Federation marks an expected improvement from a 2.5 percent drop in 2009 and a 1.3 percent increase in 2008. A Discount Hypermarket!

Auchan is planning to transform an existing 9,000 sq.m hypermarket in Mulhouse, eastern France, into a discount outlet trading under the new Priba by Auchan name.

It is not clear if this move marks a turning point in its strategy and a shift towards a greater discount offering. A spokesman claimed the reason of conversion was to respond to the underperformance of the store and if succesful they may try the same model in other areas.

Consumers Spent More Than Expected

Good news before 2009 ends....Holiday retail sales this year increased approximately 3.6 percent compared with 2008, and were bolstered by online shopping and electronics purchases, according to data from SpendingPulse, a division of MasterCard.

Retail sales continue to rise in China

Retail sales are continuing to rise in China, in a further sign of the resilience of the country's economy during the recession.

The National Bureau of Statistics has reported that retail revenues in China expanded by 15.8% in November, to 1.13 trillion yuan ($165.5bn; €116.1bn; £103.8bn), although this rate of growth was down by 5% year-on-year.

Urban areas delivered an increase of 16.5%, to 760.6 billion yuan, compared with an improvement of 14.4%, to 373.3 billion yuan, in rural markets.

Top Shoppers Key to Supermarket Profitability

A 12-week analysis of more than 2 million grocery shoppers by Concept Shopping, Inc., Lisle, Ill., reveals that the top 10 percent of a given store's customers visit more than twice a week, spend more than $39.00 per visit and represent nearly 40 percent of the store’s total sales.

Wal-Mart closes at least 23 outlets of Seiyu in Japan

The US retailer Wal-Mart  revealed in its company-wide quarterly statement to the US Securities and Exchange Commission that it would close approximately 23 outlets and certain access points in Seiyu subsidiary in Japan. 

Wal-Mart bought shares in Seiyu in 2002, Japan's fifth-biggest retailer, later in March 2008  acquired majority interest and Seiku became a subsidiary of Wal-Mart. Seiku owns 371 stores in Japan (as of October 2009)

Big Retailers will target Russia!

Retail sales in Russia will rise by 3% next year, with many multinational firms hoping to expand their presence in the country in order to tap into this growing market, according to PricewaterhouseCoopers.

Total retail revenues stood at $480 billion (€319bn; £288bn) in the European nation last year – up by 27.5% on an annual basis – with food taking a 45.3% share of this figure.

Wal-Mart shifts Asda ownership to subsidiary Corinth

Asda has been ‘sold’ by parent Wal-Mart to investment subsidiary Corinth Services in a £6.9bn deal.

The deal, which took place in August, was described as part of a “group restructuring” and means Asda remains under the control of the US retail giant.
