Discount retailer Netto is planning to expand in Germany, Poland and Sweden following the sale of its UK arm to Asda.

French retailer Casino has reportedly hired Deutsche Bank to advise on a potential bid for Carrefour's Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand assets. Reuters reported unnamed sources that said Casino is "serious about" bidding for the Carrefour business.

Mr. Theo Albrecht, the discount grocer Aldi's co-founder, has died aged 88. Mr.Albrecht died in his home town of Essen, Germany on Saturday 28 July following a long illness.
In 2010, Albrecht was ranked by Forbes as the 31st richest person in the world, with a net worth of US$17.7bn.He has not been seen in public following his release from kidnap nearly 40 years ago.
Aldi opened its first outlet with Theo Albrecht's brother Karl in 1961.

The German discount retailer Aldi is withdrawing from Greece. Aldi plans to divest its 38 outlets in Greece and is currently in talks to sell the stores. This market exit will be the first in Aldi history.
The analysts say that Aldi could not fulfill the price expectations in Greece. It was competing with Lidl, the other famous German discounter. Carrefour has publicly denied the news which report that it plans to close some outlets in Malaysia and Singapore. Carrefour has launched plans to sell its retail busines units in Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand, according to reports. If realised, such a deal may raise around US$1.0 billion for Carrefour. Carrefour's first Indian outlet will be opened in the country's capital, Delhi, by the end of next month. The 55,000 square feet shop would be located at the Metro Mall complex in the Seelampur area of east Delhi and would offer 30,000 products.

Asda has bought Netto’s UK business from its Danish owners. The deal, believed to be worth £778m, is subject to approval from the Office of Fair Trading, but Asda expects to have completed it by late summer. Asda plans to refurbish all Netto’s UK stores and have them trade under its own fascia by mid-2011. Carrefour, the world's second largest retailer, has secured four properties in four cities across India and plans to set up 4 to 5 cash-and-carry stores by the end of 2010. Totaling $355.8 billion, retail sales in January increased 0.5 percent from the previous month and 4.7 percent from January 2009, according to the U.S. Department of Commerce (DoC).

U.S. retail sales should rise 2.5 percent this year, signaling that store chains have made it through the worst of the downturn as improvements in the housing and job markets bolster shoppers' confidence, a trade group forecast on Tuesday. Auchan is planning to transform an existing 9,000 sq.m hypermarket in Mulhouse, eastern France, into a discount outlet trading under the new Priba by Auchan name.

Retail sales are continuing to rise in China, in a further sign of the resilience of the country's economy during the recession. A 12-week analysis of more than 2 million grocery shoppers by Concept Shopping, Inc., Lisle, Ill., reveals that the top 10 percent of a given store's customers visit more than twice a week, spend more than $39.00 per visit and represent nearly 40 percent of the store’s total sales.

The US retailer Wal-Mart revealed in its company-wide quarterly statement to the US Securities and Exchange Commission that it would close approximately 23 outlets and certain access points in Seiyu subsidiary in Japan.

Asda has been ‘sold’ by parent Wal-Mart to investment subsidiary Corinth Services in a £6.9bn deal.
