Aldi withdraws from Greece

The German discount  retailer Aldi is withdrawing from Greece. Aldi plans to divest its 38 outlets in Greece and is currently in talks to sell the stores. This market exit will be the first in Aldi history.

The analysts say that Aldi could not fulfill the price expectations in Greece. It was competing with Lidl, the other famous German discounter. They also add that Aldi may withdraw from Poland in near future as well, since its expansion there is rather slow and the competition is fierce.

Aldi said it plans to focus its energies on developing in the nine other markets it operates in, including the UK, Ireland, the US and Australia.

 

Cacao prices rocketing due to hedge fund purchases

A London hedge fund Armajaro has bought 240.100 tons of cacao, a large chunk of the world’s stocks of cocoa beans, which led the prices to their highest level in 33 years. THis purchase is the biggest delivery from London’s Liffe exchange since 1996 and equal to about 7 per cent of annual global production.

Unilever sold Findus Italy to Birds Eye Iglo

Unilever  confirmed the sale of its Findus Italy business to frozen-foods group Birds Eye Iglo in a deal worth 805m EUR (1.04bnUS$). Unilever said it had sold Findus Italy "to a company in which Birds Eye Iglo has a significant stake" three months after it had put the business on the block.

Unilever said Findus Italy, which sells brands including 4 Salti in Padella, Sofficini and Captain Findus, generated 462m EUR turnover in 2009.

Wrigley in-houses core brands

Mars owned Wrigley is bringing the production of Life Savers mints in-house by expanding its  plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The relocation is expected to be complete by the end of 2010. This move is a part of a strategy which aims to manufacture most of the core products in-house. This way Wrigley expects to improve business from these brands. Nestle withdraws health claims from a kids drink in US

Nestle SA subsidiary in US has agreed to drop advertising claims that its children's drink BOOST Kid Essentials prevents colds and flu, the Federal Trade Commission said on Wednesday. The FTC, which pursues deceptive advertising, took issue with claims that BOOST prevented colds and flu by strengthening the immune system, focusing on advertisements for a drink embedded with probiotic bacteria.

Emerging middle class in developing countries is a new target for multinationals

Brand owners stand to gain substantial benefits from targeting the rapidly-expanding middle class in a range of developing economies around the world, a new report has argued. According to a study by McKinsey, the consultancy, the inexorable rise of this demographic spans "a dozen emerging nations, not just the fast-growing BRIC countries" of Brazil, Russia, India and China.

Kraft launched an i-Pad app for cooking

Kraft Foods has launched an iPad app in the US to help families expand their cooking knowledge and learn basic kitchen skills. The app, called Big Fork Little Fork, features 300 recipes, how-to videos, educational games and interactive elements to help parents involve their children at mealtime.
