Sara Lee sells North American Bakery Division

It is reported that the US food group Sara Lee Corp. is considering the sale of its North American bakery division. According to reports Sara Lee has hired banking advisers to set out the options for the business, which could be worth US$1.5bn.

The North American bakery business had $2.2 billion in sales in the most recent fiscal year, about 17 percent of total revenue for the company, which also owns Hillshire Farm deli meats, Senseo coffee and other food brands.

Sara Lee CEO Barnes steps down temporarily

US group Sara Lee has announced that chairman and CEO Ms. Brenda Barnes will temporarily stand down from her post for medical reasons.The company has appointed CFO Mr. Marcel Smits to serve as interim CEO. Lead independent director James Crown will take over as chairman.

Mark Garvey, SVP global business services and corporate controller, will assume the responsibilities of CFO.

U.S. food makers are looking overseas for more profitable growth over the next few years, as they often must rely on short-term price promotions to drive sales at home.

Sara Lee Corp.  reported monday strong operating income growth for the second quarter of fiscal 2010, driven by significant improvement in operating segment income across the company, particularly in the North American Retail and International Beverage business segments, and lower corporate expenses.
